Riedel Tyrol Glass Collection

Riedel has been known for over four decades for designing the most finely tuned instruments for every level of wine sophistication as well, today, as the finest wine glasses in all price categories. While a glass cannot alter a fine wine or spirit, it can and does dramatically alter our perception of it.

In 1958, Riedel introduced the Burgundy Grand Cru glass, the only stemware on permanent display in New York City's Museum of Modern Art. Since then, Riedel has designed over 100 glasses. As a connoisseur of fine wines and spirits (Georg was named Decanter Magazine's 1996 Man of the Year), Riedel develops new glass shapes to enhance the world's most exciting and complex beverages at tasting workshops with leading international wine and spirit producers rather than on a drawing board or by computer. Most of Riedel's glasses in a myriad of shapes ranging in size from thimble to fish bowl were created to highlight the finest characteristics of the particular liquids they would direct onto the palate. That is, each glass was developed for a single individual beverage and therefore has a specific purpose.

Developed by Georg Riedel on the principle that content commands shape. Each glass, tailored to a specific grape varietal, highlights its particular flavors by directing where the wine first meets the tongue. 24% lead crystal. Hand wash. Made in Germany. German porcelain factory, Arzberg, manufactured this pair of cups and saucers in around 1985 as part of its commercial range of contemporary teaware. The post-modern, transfer-printed patterns contrast the traditional porcelain forms. Arzberg has made functional, well-designed pieces since 1931. Its wares are characterised by minimal decoration, such as the linear patterns on these pieces .

The Arzberg porcelain factory opened in Bavaria, Germany, in 1887 though achieved enormous success in the late 1920s when it formed a partnership with the organiser of the 1928 Berlin Exhibition of Good Design. In 1931, Arzberg released a white porcelain tea set, called the '1382', that Gretsch designed.
